Here’s a great film that demonstrates the use of several institutions to shape an element of culture: diet.

In short: the Japanese government (specifically the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) produced a film, and distributed it broadly–including on YouTube–to educate citizens to eat a more traditional diet. This diet–more heavily based on fish, rice, and other foods that are lower on the food chain and can be produced in Japan–will lower Japan’s ecological impact while making it more food secure. It makes sense that the government would advertise this way of eating. Let’s hope it can compete with the billions fast food companies spend on advertising in Japan each year.
