A report from ActionAID released today, Fertile Ground—How Donors and Governments can halve hunger by supporting small farmers, calls on governments and donors to make women farmers central part of agriculture funding and development in order to reach the goal of halving the number of people–over 1 billion–going hungry everyday worldwide by 2015. Currently, only 10 percent of international donor funding is directed at women farmers. But with women constituting up to 80% of small scale farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, projects that prioritize the needs of women, like those Nourishing the Planet project co-Director Danielle Nierenberg visited in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, are important for both increasing food security and protecting an important natural resources.
