As world leaders gathered in Kampala, Uganda for the African Union Summit this week, United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Josette Sheeran pledged commitment to helping Africa’s efforts to combat hunger and malnutrition and improve food security.
Sheeran espoused the benefits of food-based social protection programs for creating stable markets for smallholder farmers. The WFP’s Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative, for example, buys surplus from local farmers’ organizations for aid operations, helping to boost production and incomes. The WFP also looks to African farmers to supply fortified food products in order to both create job opportunities and decrease malnourishment.
“WFP envisions the day when its emergency operations in Africa will be largely supplied by African farmers. We are gearing programmes to empower people to be food self-sufficient and contribute to the food supply chain,” said Sheeran.
