As part of our campaign, we put together a special article celebrating 25 amazing women we have met on the ground. These women, including Rebecca Adamson, Stephanie Hansen, and Carolyn Raffesnperger, have been ongoing sources of inspiration to NtP and others.
And we want to spread the word that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced its 22nd International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment. This year’s theme is “Water: The Source of Life.” Children from all over the world are invited to submit their original paintings to the UNEP office in their region by February 29, 2013.
We analyze a new agricultural innovation from India called Nano Ganesh. This technology is transforming the way farmers manage their water systems by giving them the freedom to turn pumps on and off, from any location, with their mobile phone. Read more about Nano Ganesh and its benefits for farmers here.
We continued to receive some exciting news coverage this week. NtP was featured in a Forbes article, “Want More than Food Porn? Try These Info-Filled Sites,” published this past Monday. The article highlights websites that “help visualize serious issues for interested viewers.”
Further highlights from this past week:
Our Citywatch post discusses forest gardens in Honduras that make the best of two worlds. Guest blogger Wayne Roberts writes, “What I saw among the Indigenous peoples in Yorito and its surrounding mountain ranges certainly confirms the view that forest gardens have what it takes to provide food, as well as other benefits.”
And our indigenous vegetable of the week is fonio. Until recently, fonio was considered by many crop breeders and agronomists to be an inferior grain due to its small seed size. People are now discovering, however, that with its high nutritional content and adaptability to harsh environments, fonio can boost health and incomes for both consumers and farmers.
