Nourishing the Planet spent the week in Washington, D.C., where we continued to meet with researchers, food activists and journalists, to share the innovations featured in State of the World 2011: Innovations that Nourish the Planet. We are also looking out for US/Canadian agricultural innovations to highlight, so send us your suggestions to dnierenberg@worldwatch.org.

Some highlights from the past week: This week, we interviewed Alexandra Spieldoch, Coordinator of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders in Agriculture within Women Organizing for Change in Agriculture & Natural Resource Management (WOCAN). She believes that the ongoing global food crisis—fueled by social unrest and climate instability—requires governments to take a comprehensive, people-centered approach to support small-scale farmers and to put access to food above overall production.

This week’s innovation highlights the Seattle-based organization, New Course, which is working with the Tanzanian Forest Conservation Group to provide farmers with the right resources to integrate their farming practices with reforestation efforts. This is helping farmers improve their harvest, as well as repair the damage in the surrounding forests.

In this week’s Nourishing the Planet TV episode, we discuss how helping farmers to benefit from wildlife conservation can improve diets, increase livelihoods, and protect the environment. Organizations, such as the Rhino Conservation Trust in Zimbabwe, are helping farmers grow their crops in harmony with the surrounding environment and wildlife.

Now it’s your turn: What were your favorite posts from the week? What do you hope we’ll write about next week? Let us know in the comments!
