We have a whole new crop of staff and interns joining the Nourishing the Planet team this summer. Today, meet Philip Newell.
Philip Newell is graduating this summer from American University’s School of International Service with a Master’s Degree in Global Environmental Policy and a concentration in Public Policy. His thesis explored the concept of corporate social responsibility, specifically the policies of major food and beverage firms who are directly influencing farming practices across the globe.
Philip also holds a BA in Sustainable Development from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where he was taught (among other things) agroecological theory in the classroom while getting his hands dirty on the school’s organic teaching farm. Before joining Worldwatch’s Nourishing the Planet Program, Philip worked with EARTHWORKS, a DC-based NGO focusing on reducing the social and environmental damage wrought by large-scale mineral extraction projects. Philip credits his years as a rock climber as the spark that lit his environmentalist fire.
