We have a whole new crop of interns joining the Nourishing the Planet team this summer. Today, meet Katie Spoden.
Katie Spoden is a rising junior at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University in central Minnesota, where she is pursuing a degree in both Environmental Studies and Political Science. Her interest in sustainable food systems began after a trip to Heifer Ranch, Heifer International’s largest learning center, located in Perryville, Arkansas.
Katie’s concern for nutrition and hunger was further intensified after spending time with local families in San Lucas, Guatemala earlier this spring. Katie hopes to combine her interests in public policy, agriculture, gender, and the environment to work towards sustainable development in developing countries. She is very excited about her first opportunity to work towards this goal with Nourishing the Planet.
Katie is working in Washington, D.C. as part of a summer study program through the Eugene J. McCarthy Center for Public Policy and Civic Engagement, located at Saint John’s University. In her free time Katie enjoys reading, being outdoors, becoming a better runner, and exploring Washington, D.C.
