We have a whole new crop of staff and interns joining the Nourishing the Planet team this fall. Today, meet Emily Gilbert.
Emily Gilbert is a recent graduate of New York University where she studied Environmental Studies and Politics. Emily has been an environmentalist since an early age (thanks in large part to an enormous National Geographic video collection), and her interest in food justice developed during the four years she spent in New York City where the links between our nutrition, health, and the environment were apparent in the communities where she worked. Wanting to raise awareness and help bring fresh, affordable food to these communities, Emily worked at farmer’s markets and has spent the last three years teaching an after-school course on food and it’s ecological components to middle school students in Brooklyn, New York.
Emily has studied abroad in Madagascar, and interned in South Africa and Belize. These experiences have been instrumental in developing her interest and drive to help achieve food security and environmental justice for both citizens in the United States and around the world.
Next year, Emily plans on applying to graduate school for a degree in Agricultural Economics. In her free time, she loves reading, being active, cooking, and finding excuses to travel.
