We have a whole new crop of interns joining the Nourishing the Planet team this summer. Today, meet Angela Kim.
Angela is a rising senior at Mount Holyoke College, where she is pursuing her major in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Environment and Development. She is interested in food sovereignty and agroecology, as well as grassroots movements for agrarian reform. Her interest in small-scale agriculture evolved from conversations with family farmers, who have helped her understand how the rights to land and food production are essential for rural communities to counter hunger and secure autonomy.
While studying resource management in the Legal Amazon of Brazil during her junior year, Angela began an independent project on social inclusion programs that link family smallholders into the biofuel production chain. The research heightened her attention towards agricultural dynamics involving the private sector and the industrial agribusiness model. She plans to continue this study in the upcoming academic year.
Angela is very excited to work with the Nourishing the Planet team, hoping to learn more about various food systems, sustainable farming practices, and innovations from around the world. She has previously interned for advocacy groups focused on women and youth empowerment in environmental policy, as well as worked in nonprofit development to promote Asian American media arts.
In her leisure time, she enjoys roaming street fairs, listening to bossa nova, and dozing in a hammock.
